Persian Leopard Named 'Deni' After Israeli Basketball Star Deni Avdija

The Ramat Gan Safari Park has welcomed a new, rare Persian leopard, a young male who arrived in Israel from Sweden. In a unique tribute, the park's management has named the leopard 'Deni' (דני) after prominent Israeli basketball player Deni Avdija.

Hila Feldman Gra, the Safari's spokesperson, explained the choice, stating that Avdija represents excellence, perseverance, and hard work. The hope is that the leopard will also contribute to the species' breeding program and conservation efforts. The leopard 'Deni' is intended to be a mate for 'Noa', a Persian leopard already at the park named after singer Noa Kirel, with the goal of future cubs aiding conservation.

Deni Avdija expressed his excitement about the honor and pledged to visit the safari. He is not the first celebrity or public figure to have an animal named after them at the park. The article lists five rhinos also named after famous individuals: Karen Elson (singer), Rubi (former President Reuven Rivlin), Rihanna (pop star), and Tupac (rapper, who was later moved to the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo).

As his contract nears its end, there are reports suggesting that his current team, the Portland Trail Blazers, may not be in a position to retain him due to salary cap constraints.
