New Persian Leopard at Safari Park Named After NBA Star Deni Avdija

A young Persian leopard that recently arrived at the Ramat Gan Safari Park in Israel from Sweden has been named 'Deni' in honor of Israeli NBA star Deni Avdija. The approximately two-year-old leopard was transferred from the Nordens Ark zoo in Sweden as part of a European zoo collaboration.

Deni is expected to undergo an adaptation period at the safari park before being gradually introduced to 'Noa,' a female Persian leopard previously named after Israeli singer Noa Kirel. Both leopards are participating in the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) for Persian leopards, which aims to increase the population of this endangered subspecies and aid in its conservation.

Safari staff reported that Deni has adapted quickly to his new environment, showing a calm and curious demeanor shortly after arriving. "He adapted well to us, to the new home, to the new language and new smells. He has a chill personality," said Shelly Eldad, manager of the carnivore department.

The introduction process between Deni and Noa will involve controlled meetings only after caretakers confirm positive reactions from both leopards. Deni Avdija expressed his excitement about the tribute, stating, "It's not every day a leopard is named after you. It's a great honor and a gesture that really moved me. Thanks to the Safari, and I'm already looking forward to meeting Deni the leopard."

Safari officials hope that Deni will soon be visible to visitors after completing his acclimatization and introduction to Noa. He has already been accustomed to handlers and veterinary procedures as part of his training at his previous zoo.
