Persian Leopard Named After NBA Star Danny Avdija Arrives at Israeli Safari

A young Persian leopard, named Danny after NBA star Danny Avdija, has arrived at the Ramat Gan Safari in Israel from Sweden. The leopard is expected to be introduced to Noa, a female leopard named after Israeli singer Noa Kirel, as part of a European breeding program aimed at conserving the endangered Persian leopard subspecies. The two-year-old male leopard was transferred from the Nordens Ark zoo in Sweden following extensive coordination between the two institutions.

Safari officials noted that Danny has adapted quickly and exhibits a calm and curious demeanor, surprising his caretakers with his relaxed nature. "He probably picked up on our energy and we on his," said Shelly Eldad, head of the safari's carnivore department, describing the leopard as having a "chill" personality.

The introduction process between Danny and Noa will be gradual, starting with familiarization with each other's scent and presence before direct interaction. This careful approach is standard for pairing leopards.

Danny Avdija expressed his excitement about the honor, stating, "It's not every day a leopard is named after you. It's a great honor and a gesture that really moved me. Thanks to the Safari, and I look forward to meeting Danny the leopard." He has pledged to visit the safari to meet his namesake.

The safari hopes that once Danny is fully acclimated, he will be visible to the public. The leopard is already accustomed to handlers, veterinary procedures, and the presence of visitors, indicating a smooth transition to his new environment.
