Israeli Player Sent Off for Goal Celebration Mimicking Gunfire
Israeli forward Said Abu Farhi was sent off during his team's UEFA Nations League match against Austria on Thursday. The 20-year-old scored Israel's equalizer in the 55th minute with a header, making the score 1-1. Immediately after scoring, Abu Farhi ran to the corner flag, removed it, and then knelt, using the flag pole to mimic firing a rifle.
The Bulgarian referee, Georgi Kabakov, issued Abu Farhi his second yellow card for the celebration, resulting in a red card and his expulsion from the game. FIFA rules strictly prohibit provocative, political, or inciting gestures during celebrations, and the referee deemed the gun-mimicking action a clear violation.
Israel's national team was forced to play the remainder of the match with ten men. Austria capitalized on the numerical advantage, scoring two late goals in the 90th minute and stoppage time. The match concluded with Austria defeating Israel 3-1.
The loss marks the first matchday of the UEFA Nations League competition.
