Israel Player Sent Off After Scoring First National Team Goal

Sayed Abu Farhi was controversially sent off with a second yellow card during Israel's match against Austria on Thursday, immediately after scoring his first goal for the national team. The incident occurred when Abu Farhi ran towards the corner flag to celebrate his goal and mimicked what Austrian media described as a "shooting gesture." He had already received a yellow card earlier in the game.

According to Law 12.1 of the Laws of the Game, goal celebrations cannot be excessive. While leaving the field of play for a celebration does not automatically warrant a card, players can be cautioned for climbing fences, approaching spectators in a manner that causes safety issues, provocative behavior, or covering their face.

The referee deemed Abu Farhi's actions "defiant or disrespectful," leading to the second yellow card and subsequent expulsion. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviewed the decision and upheld it. In protest of the red card, Israel's coach Ran Ben Shimon was also sent off.

Members of the Israeli national team expressed disbelief, stating, "This is a regular celebration for Abu Farhi. It was a bizarre call." The team felt the decision was unwarranted given the player's typical celebratory style.
