Netanyahu Arrives in New York for Brief UN Address Amid Security Concerns

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu landed in the United States on Thursday afternoon, Israel time, for an exceptionally brief visit centered on his address to the UN General Assembly later that evening. The visit, lasting only a few hours, is significantly shorter than previous trips and will conclude with his return to Israel before the start of the Sukkot holiday.

Netanyahu is scheduled to address the General Assembly around 9:00 PM Israel time. His office stated that due to the tight schedule and the need to return for the holiday, he could only accommodate meetings with a limited number of leaders who requested to meet him. These include the presidents of Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Panama, Ethiopia, and the vice president of Colombia, as well as the prime ministers of Greece, Slovenia, and Papua New Guinea.

While previous visits typically included numerous political meetings, this itinerary does not currently feature significant bilateral discussions. The Prime Minister's office explained the abbreviated visit by citing security considerations, concerns about potential threats, and the unusual involvement of the U.S. Secret Service.

Netanyahu's speech is expected to focus on Iran's nuclear program and missile capabilities, with the Prime Minister reportedly planning to reveal new information on these topics. He is also expected to address New York City Mayor Eric Adams. In a video released prior to his departure, Netanyahu stated his mission was to defend Israel and the IDF against what he called "terrible things" and "lies" being spread on the UN stage, vowing to "fight for the truth of our soldiers, of our country" and hinting at "surprises."
