IDF Deploys Additional Division Command to West Bank Amid Rising Tensions

The Israeli military is implementing a directive from late last month to bolster forces and enhance readiness in the West Bank by deploying an additional regular division command. Starting Friday, the elite 98th Division, known for its maneuver warfare capabilities, will operate within the Gush Etzion and Judea brigades. This move will see the 98th Division assume command and control responsibilities for these brigades, while the existing Judea and Samaria Division will focus on the Benjamin, Samaria, Ephraim, and Menashe brigades. A third division, the Eastern Division, will continue to secure the Jordan Valley. This arrangement, with two full divisions and one division command operating in the West Bank and Jordan Valley, is the most significant operational deployment since Operation Defensive Shield in 2002.

The decision comes in response to a recent spate of attacks, though military officials state there are no specific intelligence warnings of imminent large-scale attacks. While numbers have increased compared to previous months, the current threat is characterized by isolated incidents and small local cells rather than organized terrorist infrastructures. This deployment is also occurring against a backdrop of significant demographic and settlement expansion in the West Bank, with over 100 new settlements and more than 150 agricultural farms established in recent years, controlling over a million dunams of land.

Military analysts suggest the IDF has struggled to adapt to the rapid settlement expansion, often finding itself reacting to changes rather than proactively preparing. The increased settlement activity has compressed the front lines and necessitates quicker responses to a variety of incidents, including attacks, settler-Palestinian clashes, and nationalist crime. The deployment of the additional division command is intended to provide more effective command and control, enabling faster responses to emerging threats before they escalate.

One senior security official described the move as adding "another chief to the area," emphasizing it's not about increasing troop numbers but enhancing leadership and response capabilities. The 98th Division's deployment is initially planned for the holiday period and may extend beyond the upcoming elections. However, the underlying changes in the West Bank's landscape are permanent, suggesting the IDF will eventually need to fundamentally alter its operational doctrine in the region.
