IDF Bolsters West Bank Security Ahead of Holidays After Terror Attack

In response to a recent terror attack in the Benjamin region, the Israeli military is significantly increasing its forces and security measures in the West Bank ahead of the Sukkot and Simchat Torah holidays. The IDF's General Staff has ordered the activation of the 98th Division command in the West Bank to bolster defense capabilities, particularly in the southern sector (Judea).

This move aims to improve the overall defense envelope, especially given the complex challenges of the olive harvest season, increased settler movement, and large public gatherings planned for the holidays. The decision follows a car-ramming attack at the Bel checkpoint, which injured Neria Laiter, and heightened concerns that this incident could be the precursor to wider escalation.

The IDF is also reinforcing troop deployments along major roads and increasing security around settlements to prevent copycat attacks during this sensitive period. Lessons from past security failures appear to have been learned, with the military adopting a more offensive posture.

Despite the heightened tensions, Hamas is reportedly facing significant operational difficulties in the West Bank due to the IDF and Shin Bet's capabilities. Attempts to direct terror cells, often guided by Zahir al-Jubari, Hamas's West Bank affairs chief, are being systematically thwarted. Hamas and Islamic Jihad are also losing ground in key strongholds like Jenin, Nur al-Shams, and Tulkarm.

Public support for attacks in the West Bank is reportedly low, primarily due to fear of IDF retaliation, though this has not deterred terror operatives from attempting to establish a presence in refugee camps.
