IDF Boosts West Bank Security Amid Rising Tensions and Holiday Fears

In response to a recent car-ramming attack at the Bel checkpoint, the Israeli military is significantly increasing its security presence in the West Bank. The commander of the 98th Division will now oversee brigades in the southern West Bank (Judea), allowing the head of the Central Command to focus on optimizing forces in the northern sector. This operational shift is expected to dramatically enhance the IDF's defensive capabilities in the region, particularly with the olive harvest season, increased settler movement, and large public prayers planned for the upcoming Sukkot and Simchat Torah holidays.

The military is also reinforcing troop deployments along major roads and bolstering security around settlements, driven by concerns of copycat attacks during this sensitive period. The IDF has reportedly learned lessons from past security failures and adopted a more offensive posture. Recent large-scale arrests have targeted terror infrastructure and inciters on social media.

Despite the heightened tensions, Hamas is reportedly facing significant operational challenges in the West Bank. The Shin Bet and IDF are systematically thwarting attempts by Hamas, led by Zaher Jabarin, to activate terror cells. Hamas operatives are also struggling to acquire weapons, partly due to IDF seizures and arms dealers affiliated with Fatah refusing to sell to them. Furthermore, Hamas and Islamic Jihad are losing ground in key strongholds like Jenin, Nur al-Shams, and Tulkarm.

Internal polls in the West Bank indicate low public support for attacks, primarily due to fear of IDF retaliation, though this has not deterred terror operatives from attempting to re-establish themselves in refugee camps.
