IDF Reorganizes West Bank Command After Deadly Attack

In response to a recent fatal attack at the Beit Sira checkpoint, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is enhancing its operational readiness in the West Bank. The military announced a significant reorganization of command structures, including the activation of the 98th Division to assume control over some regional brigades, operating alongside the existing Judea and Samaria Division. This unusual step aims to bolster command and control across the entire geographical area, driven by concerns of potential "inspiration attacks" and copycat incidents.

The initial investigation into the checkpoint incident, where a lone attacker rammed a vehicle into soldiers before exiting and opening fire, revealed the assailant originated from the village of Beit Ur al-Tahta. The IDF confirmed the attacker surprised soldiers during a routine inspection, injuring one, before being neutralized by forces on site.

Under the new division of responsibilities, the 98th Division will oversee the Gush Etzion and Judea brigades, while the Judea and Samaria Division will continue to command the Benjamin, Samaria, Ephraim, and Menashe sectors. Central Command explained the move is intended to address the expanding area of operations in recent years and tighten security.

Senior officers emphasized that activating the division is not based on specific intelligence but rather a proactive measure to prepare for all possible scenarios. Security officials are monitoring ongoing efforts by terror organizations, directed by Hamas leadership in Gaza and Turkey, to instigate further attacks. The upcoming holiday season, olive harvest, and local elections are identified as periods of heightened security risk, with increased friction between populations necessitating maximum vigilance. Reinforcements have been deployed to key locations to prevent wider escalation.
