IDF Deploys 24 Battalions in West Bank Amid Rising Incitement and Security Challenges

The IDF Central Command has deployed 24 battalions across the West Bank to stabilize the area, halt a surge in attacks, and restore order following recent violence. Security forces have detected a sharp rise in incitement to violence within the Palestinian Authority, especially on social media, raising concerns about copycat attacks and lone-wolf assailants exploiting the tense atmosphere. Since a deadly shooting near the village of Tal, where two Israeli soldiers were killed, the military, Shin Bet, and Border Police have intensified operations, arresting over 70 suspects and interrogating hundreds more.

Focused raids included a targeted operation in Tal, the assailant’s hometown, where 11 suspects were detained and about 80 questioned. Other battalions conducted sweeps arresting Hamas operatives and militants involved in attacks and arms trafficking. The IDF has gained unprecedented operational freedom in Palestinian cities like Nablus and Jenin, enabling rapid counterterrorism actions such as the capture of two attackers at a hospital in Nablus shortly after the shooting. This enhanced control has contributed to a significant decline in terror incidents, from 850 in 2023 to around 60 so far in 2025.

However, the security situation faces new challenges due to the rapid expansion of agricultural outposts in the West Bank, now numbering over 126, with four new outposts established just recently near Gilead Farm in response to the attack. This expansion has forced the IDF to shift from perimeter defense of settlements to broader protection of open areas, creating operational gaps exacerbated by a shortage of soldiers. The government’s accelerated settlement activity in Areas A and B often outpaces military preparedness, resulting in reactive rather than strategic defense.

Additionally, rising nationalist violence by settlers has sparked the formation of unofficial "resistance committees" in Palestinian villages, intended to protect against these attacks but feared by Israeli commanders as potential precursors to armed militias. The military also reports dangerous attempts by Palestinians to seize weapons during clashes, highlighted by incidents near Tal and Susya farms. The volatile security environment is compounded by the absence of a full-time Civil Administration head, with the acting commander also serving as the Defense Minister’s military secretary.

A senior IDF officer described the West Bank as "a pot on the fire," emphasizing the delicate balance and unpredictability of escalation. Recent events, including a suspected arson at Gilead Farm that turned out to be accidental, illustrate the high tensions and the challenge of preventing further violence in this sensitive region.
