IDF Boosts West Bank Forces Amid Escalation Fears
The Israeli military is increasing its troop presence in the West Bank, with three regular brigades set to be stationed there, as concerns grow over potential escalation. The Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, has ordered heightened readiness and designated an additional division to reinforce the area if needed. This move comes amid warnings of rising tensions and the possibility of nationalist crime spiraling out of control.
A senior security official explained that the aim is to provide flexibility for all scenarios, ensuring forces are immediately available rather than needing to be recalled from leave or training. Within two weeks, the West Bank division will expand to 16 battalions, comprising the Nahal Brigade, the Home Front Command's regular brigade, and the Paratroopers Brigade.
During the upcoming holidays, a significant increase in Israelis visiting the West Bank is expected. The military is concerned about several threats, including terror infrastructure, lone operatives attempting attacks, and nationalist crime that could ignite the region. While forces are highly professional in counter-terrorism operations, a senior official noted their difficulty in handling civilian incidents involving Israelis and friction with Palestinians.
This official suggested that better preparation, particularly mental, and clearer directives are needed for soldiers dealing with Israeli civilians. The complex task of law enforcement and order maintenance, especially concerning Israeli violence and friction with Palestinians, should ideally be transferred to the Border Police and Israel Police. The military anticipates provocations and extremist activities, particularly around illegal outposts, as elections approach, with young individuals from outside the West Bank often instigating nationalist crime.
Addressing these issues effectively will require a combined effort from the military, police, Border Police, and the court system, alongside local Jewish community leaders. The official highlighted the persistent problem of illegal outposts being repeatedly evacuated only to be re-established.
