IDF Reinforces Forces in West Bank Amid Rising Jewish Extremist Violence

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are significantly increasing their presence in the West Bank due to escalating concerns over rising Jewish extremist violence and illegal outposts. This decision follows a special security meeting convened by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, attended by Defense Minister and IDF Chief of Staff, where senior Central Command officials presented recommendations to address the volatile situation. The security establishment warned of a potential loss of control in the region, prompting plans to deploy over 26 battalions to the area.

The measures proposed include expanding police arrests, imposing fines and economic sanctions, and efforts to curb support from some government members for the rioters, which is seen as fostering a permissive environment. This escalation comes despite a noted decrease in Palestinian terrorism, attributed to effective Shin Bet and military operations. However, Jewish extremist attacks have increased in frequency and severity, including recent incidents in southern Mount Hebron where settlers reportedly broke into Palestinian homes and stole property.

The security apparatus has long expressed concerns about insufficient tools to combat Jewish terrorism, with the IDF Chief of Staff warning of the growing volatility and risk of losing control over the West Bank. The current reinforcement and policy adjustments aim to restore order and prevent further deterioration of the security situation in the area.
