IDF Boosts West Bank Presence with Elite Division Amid Rising Security Concerns

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are significantly increasing their presence in Judea and Samaria, commonly known as the West Bank, by deploying the 98th Division to preempt a potential escalation of attacks. This move, reported by military correspondent Avi Ashkenazi for Maariv, signals a heightened security focus on the region.

Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir authorized the transfer of the 98th Division's headquarters to the southern West Bank, where it will operate alongside the Judea and Samaria Division. The 98th Division is a maneuver unit, and its redeployment indicates that the West Bank is becoming a critical security zone for Israel, with military assessments indicating a high likelihood of further deterioration in the situation.

This deployment occurs while the IDF maintains operations on other fronts. In Lebanon, forces are active along the "Blue Line," employing air, artillery, and armored units, alongside engineering troops clearing potential explosives. While Hezbollah is not assessed as seeking a large-scale conflict, they may resort to limited actions, such as using explosive devices, allowing for plausible deniability.

In Gaza, the IDF continues its operations against Hamas, recently uncovering tunnel infrastructure in the central sector. A recent target was Muhammad Abu Alwan, identified as Hamas's finance minister in Gaza, responsible for the financial system supporting the organization's military wing.

The IDF's strategy, according to Ashkenazi, aims to reduce the need for large-scale ground operations by targeting Hamas leaders and infrastructure, partly due to a perceived lack of international support for major incursions. The 98th Division's primary mission is to exert strong pressure in the West Bank to prevent future attacks and stabilize the security situation.
