IDF Deploys Reserve Division in West Bank Amid Security Concerns Before Holidays

Following a severe attack at the Beit Sira checkpoint on Route 443, where a reservist soldier was seriously injured on Wednesday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has decided to activate the 98th Division in the Judea and Samaria region. This division will assume command over the Judea and Etzion brigades.

The decision stems from concerns within the security establishment that the recent attack may signal an escalation in the frequency and severity of terror incidents in the area, particularly with the upcoming Sukkot and Simchat Torah holidays approaching. The IDF stated that this move aims to strengthen command and control, enhancing defensive and offensive capabilities in the region.

Previously, a single regular division commanded all six regional brigades in Judea and Samaria. With the activation of the 98th Division, it will oversee the southern part of the sector, specifically the Judea area. This reorganization will allow the commander of the Judea and Samaria division to concentrate efforts on reinforcing forces and addressing threats in other parts of the sector.

Concurrently, the security apparatus is preparing for Sukkot and Simchat Torah, periods when thousands of Israelis are expected to visit heritage sites and locations throughout Judea and Samaria. The IDF and security forces are continuing operational activities against terror infrastructure and conducting arrests in the area.

The deployment of the 98th Division is part of a series of measures implemented in recent days in response to a string of security incidents in Judea and Samaria. The IDF characterizes this action as a reinforcement of command and control in the sector, intended to improve the ability to counter terror events and bolster the defense of communities and roads.
