Knesset Member Ofer Cassif Faces Election Committee Disqualification Over Assault Case

The Israeli Central Elections Committee is considering disqualifying several candidates and lists, including Knesset Member Ofer Cassif of the Joint List. The primary grounds for the potential disqualification stem from a May 2022 incident where Cassif was filmed assaulting a police officer during a demonstration near Hebron. Video footage shows Cassif driving his vehicle onto the officer's leg, exiting his car, and then slapping the officer.

Despite the clear video evidence, the legal process has been notably slow. The then-Police Commissioner urgently filed a complaint with the Attorney General, requesting an investigation into Cassif. However, it took three months for the Attorney General to authorize a police investigation under caution. The State Prosecutor's Office recommended indicting Cassif in February 2023, but the indictment was only filed in late February 2024.

As of September 23, 2026, over two and a half years after the indictment, there has been no verdict. The article highlights numerous delays and postponements in the legal proceedings. In the more than 4.5 years since the incident, Cassif should have ideally been convicted and disqualified from running for the Knesset.

Furthermore, over a year ago, it was reported that the Jerusalem District Prosecutor's Office reached a plea deal with Cassif. Under this agreement, he would admit to assaulting a police officer under aggravating circumstances, and the prosecution would seek a seven-month sentence of community service. However, the State Prosecutor refused to approve this deal, and Cassif continued to serve as a Knesset member. The verdict in his case is expected shortly before the elections, with the sentencing likely to occur much later, even before any potential appeals are considered.
