Ofer Cassif Rejects Disqualification Bid, Citing "Gross Distortion of Reality"

Member of Knesset Ofer Cassif, affiliated with the United List, has vehemently rejected a petition seeking to disqualify him from running in the upcoming legislative elections. Cassif characterized the move as an attempt to equate his opposition to the current government's policies with disloyalty to the state.

"To present my opposition to the government's policy and the actions of its representatives as support for the enemy, disloyalty, or an attack on the state is a gross distortion of reality and a complete perversion of the democratic spirit," Cassif stated. The petition was submitted to the Central Elections Committee by several bereaved families and terror attack victims, with backing from the organization B'Tsalmo.

Supporters of the disqualification argue that Cassif's public stances warrant his removal from the race for the 26th Knesset. Cassif countered that opposing actions taken in the state's name does not harm Israel's interests or strengthen its adversaries. He asserted that advocating for justice and condemning injustices ultimately serves all of Israeli society.

"My public duty is neither to the government and its courtiers nor to the ruling hegemony," Cassif declared, adding that he aims to prevent Israelis from being drawn into committing war crimes "in the name of necessity and vengeance." The Central Elections Committee is scheduled to review the disqualification request, with any subsequent decision subject to appeal at the Supreme Court.
