Israel's Attorney General Rejects Party Disqualification Bids, Eyes Arab Israeli Lawmaker
Israel's Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara and the State Prosecutor have submitted their position to the Central Elections Committee, stating there is no legal basis to disqualify several political parties from running in the upcoming elections. These parties include Religious Zionism, Identity, Democrats, Ra'am, Otzma Yehudit, the Joint List, and Balad.
Additionally, the legal opinion found no grounds to disqualify Knesset Member Ofer Cassif. However, regarding candidate Sami Abu Shehadeh, the Attorney General's office indicated that evidence, particularly from an article he published on October 8, 2023, suggests he expressed support for an armed struggle by a terror organization against Israel.
The Attorney General's office recommended that the Elections Committee give serious consideration to the request to disqualify Abu Shehadeh based on these findings. The committee is expected to deliberate on these recommendations.
