Israel's Attorney General Urges Serious Consideration of Politician's Disqualification

Israel's Attorney General and State Prosecutor have recommended that the Central Elections Committee "seriously consider" disqualifying Sami Abu Shehadeh, a candidate for the 26th Knesset, from running in the upcoming elections. The recommendation stems from an article Abu Shehadeh published on October 8, 2023, in which he allegedly expressed support for an armed struggle against Israel.

The legal opinion submitted to the committee states that the evidence, particularly from the article, suggests Abu Shehadeh's support for an armed struggle by a terrorist organization against the State of Israel. The opinion further notes that Abu Shehadeh's written response to the disqualification request did not sufficiently clarify that his article did not reflect support for an armed struggle against Israel, especially given the sensitive timing.

Therefore, the Attorney General and State Prosecutor believe the Central Elections Committee should carefully weigh the disqualification request against Abu Shehadeh during its upcoming hearing, applying legal standards and considering his arguments. Simultaneously, the legal officials determined there was no legal basis to disqualify several other parties and candidates, including Ra'am, Otzma Yehudit, Balad, the Joint List, Religious Zionism, Zehut, and MK Ofer Cassif.

In a related development, Judge Noam Sohlberg denied Abu Shehadeh's request to postpone the hearing concerning his candidacy, ordering it to proceed as scheduled via Zoom.
