Legal Advisor Recommends Disqualifying Arab Israeli Politician Sami Abou Shehadeh
The Israeli government's legal advisor, Gali Baharav-Miara, announced on Tuesday that Sami Abou Shehadeh, head of the National Democratic Assembly party, should be considered for disqualification from the upcoming elections. The announcement came in a statement released today, in which she also acknowledged that there is no legal basis to disqualify the joint Arab list, which includes the National Democratic Assembly.
Baharav-Miara's recommendation is based on Abou Shehadeh's alleged support for a terrorist organization and his participation in events that could be interpreted as denying the State of Israel's right to exist. The legal advisor stated that while there is no legal foundation to disqualify the entire joint list, Abou Shehadeh's candidacy warrants review.
The National Democratic Assembly is part of the Joint List, a political alliance of Arab parties in Israel. The decision on whether to disqualify Abou Shehadeh will ultimately rest with the Central Elections Committee, which is expected to review the legal advisor's recommendation.
