Legal Reporter Slams Attorney General's Stance on Candidate Disqualification

Legal reporter Avishai Greenzaig criticized the Attorney General's office for its unclear stance on disqualifying Knesset candidates, calling it unprecedented. The Attorney General's office stated that there is no legal basis to disqualify several parties and candidates, including the Religious Zionism party, Otzma Yehudit, and Joint List, as well as MK Ofer Cassif. However, regarding Sami Abu Shehadeh, the office noted that evidence, particularly an article he published on October 8, 2023, suggests he expressed support for an armed struggle by a terror organization against Israel. The Attorney General's office indicated that Abu Shehadeh's written response did not sufficiently clarify that his article did not express support for armed struggle against Israel at a critical time. Therefore, the Central Elections Committee was advised to seriously consider the disqualification request for Abu Shehadeh, taking into account his arguments and legal standards. Greenzaig expressed dismay at the wording, stating, "To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time an Attorney General has not expressed a clear opinion on whether to disqualify a Knesset candidate." He questioned the legal validity of the statement, asking, "Is this a legal position? What does it mean?"
