Israeli Justice Ministry Divided Over Disqualifying Arab Lawmaker Sami Abou Shehadeh

The debate arose during meetings held on Wednesday and Thursday concerning allegations that Abou Shehadeh supported Hamas following an article published on October 8, 2023. Deputy State Attorney Alon Altman argued that the evidence was insufficient to warrant disqualification. However, Deputy Attorney General Avital Sumbulinsky and the Director of High Court Petitions, who were not named, leaned towards supporting his removal from the ballot. Other senior officials emphasized the importance of freedom of expression, even if Abou Shehadeh's statements were deemed "shocking and abhorrent." The Attorney General, who participated in the Zoom meeting, remained silent. Ultimately, the government's legal advisor concluded the discussion by stating that Abou Shehadeh's justifications and explanations for the article must be heard before a final decision is made.
