Israel's Attorney General Recommends Review of Arab MK's Candidacy
Israel's Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, announced on Tuesday that there is no legal basis to disqualify several parties and candidates from running in the upcoming elections. These include the Religious Zionism and Identity parties, Democrats, Ra'am, Otzma Yehudit, the Joint List, and Balad, as well as MK Ofer Cassif.
However, in the case of candidate Sami Abu Shehadeh, the Attorney General stated that evidence, particularly an article he published on October 8, 2023, suggests he expressed support for an armed struggle by a terror organization against Israel. Baharav-Miara indicated that Abu Shehadeh's written response to the disqualification request did not sufficiently clarify that his article did not reflect support for armed conflict against Israel at a critical time.
Consequently, the Central Elections Committee has been advised to seriously consider the disqualification request for Abu Shehadeh, taking into account legal standards and his arguments presented to the committee. The decision on his candidacy now rests with the committee.
