Legal Advisor Recommends Review of Arab Candidate's Disqualification Bid

Israel's Attorney General has recommended that the Central Elections Committee seriously consider the request to disqualify Arab candidate Sami Abu Shehadeh, citing concerns over his alleged support for "armed struggle by a terrorist organization against the State of Israel." The legal opinion distinguished Abu Shehadeh from other Arab parties and candidates, focusing on a specific article he published on October 8, 2023. The Attorney General's office stated that Abu Shehadeh's written response to the disqualification request was insufficient to allay these suspicions, particularly given the article's content and timing.

The disqualification request was initially filed by the Otzma Yehudit party, which accused Abu Shehadeh of denying Israel's Jewish and democratic character and supporting armed struggle against the state. Abu Shehadeh, represented by the Adalah Legal Center, denied the allegations, asserting that attempts to link his positions to violence are politically motivated. He emphasized his public stance against harming civilians, both Jewish and Arab, since the October 7th attacks and throughout the ongoing war.

The Central Elections Committee is scheduled to discuss disqualification requests for lists and candidates, including Abu Shehadeh's case, on September 23rd. The committee will review the evidence and responses according to established legal procedures.
