Justice Center Argues Knesset Member Ofer Cassif's Disqualification Lacks Legal Basis
The Central Elections Committee has decided to disqualify Knesset Member Ofer Cassif from running for election, with 18 votes in favor of the disqualification and 5 against. This decision follows a request submitted by the Likud party.
The Adalah Justice Center, representing Cassif before the committee, stated that it is difficult to imagine the Likud party believed its request was based on any relevant evidence for disqualification as stipulated by the Basic Law: Knesset. Adalah argued that Israeli law does not permit preventing someone from running for the Knesset solely for expressing sharp criticism of the army and government regarding alleged war crimes, nor for supporting the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.
Adalah expressed confidence that the Supreme Court will uphold their position and that of the Attorney General's office, asserting that the disqualification lacks any legal foundation and must therefore be overturned.
