Adalah Center Argues Against Ouster of Knesset Candidate Ofer Cassif

The Adalah Center for Legal Rights has asserted that the decision to disqualify Ofer Cassif from running for the Knesset lacks a sufficient legal basis. The center, representing Cassif before the Central Elections Committee, stated that the Likud party's request to disqualify him was not connected to the reasons stipulated in the Basic Law of the Knesset. Adalah argued that the legal standard for preventing candidacy does not permit the exclusion of an individual for criticizing the military and government over alleged war crimes or for supporting the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. These positions, according to Adalah's interpretation of the law, do not independently constitute grounds for disqualification.

The Central Elections Committee's decision to disqualify Cassif passed by a vote of 18 to 5. This ruling is part of the ongoing process for vetting candidates and lists for the Knesset elections, with disqualification decisions subject to legal review. Adalah plans to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court, expressing confidence that the court will uphold their position and that of the government's legal advisor, which they claim aligns with their view that there is no adequate legal foundation for the disqualification.

Adalah maintains that the legal opinion from the government's legal counsel supports their stance against disqualification. The center reiterated its commitment to representing Cassif through the legal process, emphasizing their belief that the Supreme Court will overturn the committee's decision. The committee's ruling initiates a new legal phase for Cassif's candidacy, with Adalah firmly holding that his criticisms and political stances do not provide legal grounds for barring him from the Knesset.
