Ofer Cassif Disqualified from Knesset Election by Central Elections Committee
The Central Elections Committee has disqualified Member of Knesset Ofer Cassif from running in the upcoming 26th Knesset elections. The disqualification request, filed by the Likud party, passed with a vote of 19 in favor and 5 against.
Cassif, a member of the Joint List party known for his controversial statements regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, responded to the decision, calling it "a predetermined decision completely lacking legal basis." He vowed to continue fighting for his constituents and for "values of peace, equality, and genuine Jewish-Arab partnership" in the next Knesset, asserting that this decision would not be the final word.
Cassif has the option to appeal the ruling to the High Court of Justice, which will make the final determination on his disqualification. He linked the decision to what he termed a "dictatorial governmental coup."
In a related move, Sami Abu Shehadeh, a member of the Balad party, was also disqualified. Allegations against him include denying Israel's character as a Jewish and democratic state and supporting armed struggle against it.
