Hundreds Mourn Man Killed by Police in Umm al-Fahm
Hundreds of residents from Umm al-Fahm and surrounding areas gathered on Sunday to mourn the funeral of Alaa Mahamid, 50, who was shot and killed by Israeli police last Thursday. The funeral procession began after afternoon prayers at the Umm al-Fahm training field, followed by burial at the al-Baqi cemetery in the Wadi Milhem area.
The Umm al-Fahm municipality and the Popular Committee had called for public participation in the funeral, designating it a "popular funeral" during an emergency meeting held last Thursday following Mahamid's death. The municipality and committee had previously decided on this course of action.
Mahamid was shot by police in the Ein Jarar area of the city. Police claimed he was attempting to flee from them when they opened fire. He is survived by his wife and five children. His family is demanding that the officer involved be prosecuted.
