Hundreds Protest in Umm al-Fahm After Police Shooting Death
Approximately 200 residents of Umm al-Fahm, an Arab city in northern Israel, protested on Thursday following the death of a local man, identified as Mahmoud Said, who was shot by Border Police officers. The incident occurred when officers responded to a report of a disturbance and allegedly found Said armed with a knife.
According to police, officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, but Said advanced towards them with the weapon, prompting one officer to open fire. The Border Police stated that an investigation into the incident has been launched. However, eyewitnesses and family members dispute the police's account, claiming Said was not armed and was shot without provocation.
The protest, which took place in the city center, saw participants chanting slogans and carrying signs condemning the police action. Local leaders have called for calm while demanding a thorough and transparent investigation into the shooting. The incident has reignited tensions between the Arab community and law enforcement in Israel.
