Protest Erupts in Umm al-Fahm After Police Shooting Death

Hundreds protested in the city of Umm al-Fahm following the killing of Ala'a Mahamid by police two days prior. The demonstration voiced outrage over the incident, with participants condemning the death. Mahamid was killed by Border Police forces on Thursday after a pursuit that began on Route 65 and concluded in Umm al-Fahm. Police stated that Mahamid posed a danger to officers during an attempted stop.

However, social media activists circulated a video that they claim contradicts the police narrative, asserting it does not show Mahamid as a threat to the Border Police. The "Musaawa" center commented that the video "exposes" the police account and raises "difficult questions" about officer conduct and the "media and legal cover" provided by police leadership. The center noted that the footage does not show Mahamid posing a direct threat at the moment he was shot, yet the incident resulted in his death.

The Mahamid family offered a different account, stating Ala'a was driving to pick up a family member for the hospital, despite his license having been previously suspended. According to the family, police stopped the car, and Mahamid exited before officers opened fire. The family claims four officers were present, and that they handcuffed Mahamid and pushed him to the ground before shooting him. They maintain he was unarmed and alone, and that the three shots fired into his chest were avoidable, as officers could have subdued him without lethal force.

The family also reported that police confiscated surveillance footage from the area after the incident, though some shop owners reportedly withheld their cameras. They emphasized the importance of footage held by residents. The family was informed that the officers involved were from the Border Police, and that the car had been stopped and searched prior to the shooting. Mahamid died at the scene, and resuscitation attempts by paramedics were unsuccessful.
