Umm Al-Fahm Residents Protest Fatal Police Shooting of Ala Mahamid

Dozens of residents gathered in Umm Al-Fahm on Saturday to protest the fatal shooting of 50-year-old Ala Mahamid by a police officer the previous Thursday. Participants, including local leaders and Mahamid's grieving family, demanded accountability for the officer involved and a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

Protesters held signs accusing the police of targeting Arab citizens and expressing anger over what they described as a trigger-happy police force. Slogans included "The state kills citizens" and "Police criminality against Arab citizens."

According to police, officers on Road 65 noticed a suspicious vehicle and attempted to stop it. The driver, identified as Mahamid, failed to comply and led police on a chase into the city. Police stated that Mahamid exited the vehicle during the attempted arrest, attacked an officer, prompting the officer to fire his weapon.

Mahamid was transported to the hospital, where he later died. The circumstances of the shooting are under investigation. Sources indicated Mahamid had a history of mental health issues and had previously received treatment.

Mahamid's body remains at the forensic medicine center in Abu Kabir, with a public funeral expected in Umm Al-Fahm pending coordination with the family. The protest was called for by the Popular Committee and the Umm Al-Fahm municipality following an emergency meeting after Mahamid's death.
