Umm Al-Fahm Residents Protest Police Killing of Man

Residents of Umm Al-Fahm and the surrounding area protested on Saturday at the city's first roundabout, condemning the killing of 50-year-old Alaa Mahamid by police gunfire last Thursday. Protesters held signs demanding accountability for the officer who shot Mahamid and accused the police of targeting Arab citizens, with some signs reading "The state kills citizens" and "Criminality by the police against Arab citizens." Police claim Mahamid was shot at close range after failing to comply with officers' orders. Mahamid's body has not yet been buried and remains at the Abu Kabir Forensic Medicine Center. A large public funeral is expected.

The protest was called for by the Umm Al-Fahm Popular Committee and Municipality following an emergency meeting. In addition to Saturday's demonstration, the committee decided to organize a public funeral in coordination with the family. They also plan to request an urgent meeting with the National Committee of Local Authority Heads and the Follow-up Committee for Arab Citizens in Israel, emphasizing the conduct of Border Police officers in Umm Al-Fahm.
