Umm Al-Fahm Mourns Man Killed by Police, Demands Independent Probe

The city of Umm Al-Fahm is holding funeral services on Sunday for Ala'a Muhammad Musa Mahamid, a young man who was killed by Israeli police gunfire. His death has sparked widespread anger and calls for an independent investigation into the circumstances of the shooting and accountability for those responsible.

The funeral procession is set to begin after the afternoon prayer from the training field, proceeding to the Al-Baqi cemetery in Wadi Muhelim. The event is taking place amidst ongoing public and official efforts in the city, with the municipality and the popular committee demanding a neutral and independent investigative committee. The family has affirmed its commitment to uncovering the truth and holding those responsible accountable.

The municipality held an emergency meeting on Thursday with representatives from Mahamid's family, the municipal council, the popular committee, and activists to discuss the incident and its aftermath. The meeting emphasized the need to pursue the case on legal, public, and political levels. The mayor announced decisions including organizing a public funeral, a protest in the city, and demanding an urgent session of the Follow-up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel and the National Committee of Local Authority Heads.

The municipality also stressed the importance of investigating the conduct of Border Police officers in the city and continuing the legal process in cooperation with the family. They specifically called for an independent investigative committee separate from the Police Internal Investigations Department (Mahash).

The popular committee in Umm Al-Fahm issued a statement holding the police responsible for Mahamid's death and rejecting the police's account of the incident. The committee described the killing as a continuation of what they termed violent policing against Arab citizens and demanded an independent and professional investigation. They expressed distrust in Mahash handling the case and insisted on the family's representation in any investigative committee to ensure transparency.

Mahamid was shot and killed by police on Thursday, September 17, 2026. The incident occurs amid ongoing tensions between Arab citizens and the police regarding security forces' conduct during protests and incidents in Arab communities. Calls have been repeatedly made by local authorities and committees for changes in police policies towards the Arab community.

The victim's brother, Khaled Mahamid, had previously demanded an investigation and accountability for the officer involved, with the family seeking full disclosure of the shooting's circumstances. These demands are part of broader protests in Umm Al-Fahm against police conduct.
