Four IDF soldiers killed in Hezbollah drone strike in southern Lebanon

Four IDF soldiers were killed overnight in southern Lebanon when an explosive drone launched by Hezbollah hit the tank they were in. The dead included the commander of the 52nd Battalion, Armored Corps Maj. Dor Ben Shimhon, along with three other soldiers whose names have not yet been cleared for publication. The IDF said the families have been notified.

In response, the military launched a broad wave of strikes overnight against Hezbollah targets. According to the IDF spokesperson, the attacks followed repeated violations of the ceasefire agreement by Hezbollah operatives in recent days. The army said the leadership had no choice but to respond forcefully to make clear that such violations would not be ignored.

The escalation comes amid what the report describes as very sensitive diplomatic circumstances. It says Iran has formally conditioned its signature on a new memorandum of understanding with the United States on Israel fully stopping all strikes in Lebanon and withdrawing all military forces beyond the border.

Despite that demand and efforts to pressure Jerusalem to halt operations, the IDF and Israel’s political leadership are signaling through their actions on the ground that protecting Israeli civilians and border security takes priority over any political agreement, and that any ceasefire violation or attack on Israeli forces will be met with heavy force and airstrikes.
