Woman Attacked in Berlin for Wearing Star of David
A 43-year-old woman was assaulted with a broken glass bottle in central Berlin after two men noticed the Star of David she was wearing and hurled antisemitic slurs at her, Berlin police announced Sunday. The woman sustained injuries to her hand and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The attack occurred early Friday morning, just before the Jewish Sabbath began, as the woman was walking on Torstrasse in the Mitte district. According to initial findings, the two unidentified assailants approached her, noticed the pendant, made comments about it, and directed antisemitic insults her way. The situation escalated when one of the men attacked her with the broken bottle. The woman attempted to defend herself with her hands, suffering several cuts in the process.
The assailants fled the scene after the attack. Emergency services provided initial medical care and transported her to a hospital for further treatment. Berlin police are investigating the incident as an antisemitic hate crime.
The investigation has been transferred to the State Security Department of the Berlin State Criminal Police Office (LKA), which handles politically motivated and extremist offenses. Police are continuing their efforts to locate and identify the two suspects, and no further details regarding their identities or the circumstances leading to the encounter have been released beyond their reaction to the Star of David and the antisemitic remarks.
