Woman Attacked in Berlin for Wearing Star of David Necklace

Berlin police are investigating a violent antisemitic assault that occurred early Friday morning in the city center, leaving a 43-year-old woman hospitalized. According to initial findings reported by the German newspaper Bild, the incident took place around 2:30 AM on Torstrasse. The victim was walking when two unidentified men noticed the Star of David necklace she was wearing. They approached her, began hurling antisemitic insults and curses, and then one of the suspects attacked her with a broken glass bottle.

During the struggle as the woman attempted to defend herself, she sustained multiple cuts to her hand. The two assailants fled the scene. Medical teams who arrived provided initial treatment and transported her to a hospital for further care. The State Protection Department of the Berlin Police's Criminal Investigation Department (LKA), which handles hate crimes and politically motivated offenses, is leading the investigation.

The Israeli Embassy in Berlin commented on the incident, stating, "This is what antisemitic hatred looks like when it turns into violence." Ahead of upcoming elections, the embassy called on all parties to take a clear stance, emphasizing that "antisemitism and violence against Jews have no place in Berlin. There is no relativity. There are no excuses."

This attack follows other recent antisemitic incidents in Germany, including warnings about the safety of Holocaust memorial sites after the far-right's electoral success and posters calling for "Death to the IDF" being displayed.
