Woman Attacked in Berlin for Wearing Star of David Necklace

A 43-year-old woman was assaulted in Berlin by two men who targeted her because she was wearing a Star of David necklace. The incident occurred around 2:30 AM on Friday morning in the Mitte district. According to Berlin police, the assailants approached the woman after noticing her necklace, hurled antisemitic slurs at her, and then one of them struck her with a broken glass bottle. The woman sustained cuts on her hand while trying to defend herself. The attackers fled the scene, and the woman was treated by paramedics and taken to a hospital.

Berlin police have opened an investigation into the attack, suspecting it was motivated by antisemitism. The case has been assigned to the State Security Division of the Criminal Police, which handles politically motivated, extremist, or antisemitic offenses. No arrests have been made yet.

This attack adds to a growing number of antisemitic incidents reported in Germany's capital. Official statistics from Berlin indicate that in 2025, there were 2,268 antisemitic offenses recorded in the city, a 24.3% increase from the previous year, with 64 of these classified as violent crimes. In July, the Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office reported opening 820 antisemitic-related proceedings in 2025, up from 756 in 2024.

A representative for the prosecutor's office warned that the high volume of incidents not only harms the direct victims but also undermines the sense of security within the Jewish community in Berlin.
