Tens of Thousands of Jewish Pilgrims Gather in Uman for Rosh Hashanah Amidst War
Over 60,000 Jewish pilgrims from around the world have arrived in Uman, Ukraine, to celebrate Rosh Hashanah and visit the tomb of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. The figure, reported by JDN citing the leadership of the Breslov Hasidic association in Uman, significantly exceeds the Ukrainian authorities' expectation of approximately 40,000 visitors.
On Friday, September 11, tens of thousands of worshippers participated in a mass prayer, "Tikkun HaKlali," near Rabbi Nachman's tomb. The pilgrimage is taking place under heightened security measures due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Checkpoints have been established at entry points, and traffic is restricted in the pilgrimage area. Israeli police officers are on the ground, patrolling alongside Ukrainian police.
Ukrainian authorities had previously advised foreign nationals to avoid travel due to the threat of Russian missile and drone attacks. They also reminded pilgrims of the need to adhere to air raid sirens and curfew regulations.
