Opposition Parties Forge Alliances for Upcoming Elections

Two Israeli opposition parties, Avigdor Lieberman's Yisrael Beiteinu and Naftali Bennett's HaBayit HaYehudi, have agreed to sign a surplus vote agreement for the upcoming elections. This move aims to prevent the loss of votes and maximize their chances of gaining seats.

Following this announcement, Gadi Eisenkot's The Israelis party declared its intention to sign a similar agreement with Yair Golan's "The Democrats" party. A statement from The Israelis party indicated that Gadi Eisenkot has been working to unite the "change bloc" and that the formation of four parties now allows for mutual surplus vote agreements, a lesson learned from previous elections.

The parties expressed optimism that every vote cast by Israelis seeking change and the replacement of the current government will go to one of the "change parties," thereby avoiding wasted votes. A surplus vote agreement is a mechanism designed to increase a party's chances of winning an additional mandate after the elections by allowing two parties to be considered together for the distribution of leftover mandates under the Bader-Ofer method.
