IDF Soldier Arrested in Northern Israel Arms Trafficking Probe

Israeli police and military police have arrested three suspects, including an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier, in connection with a serious arms trafficking investigation. The soldier is serving at a military base in northern Israel. The investigation, a joint effort by the Coastal District's Major Crimes Unit and the Northern District's Military Police Investigation Unit, focuses on the suspected trafficking of military weapons.

Following investigative and operational activities, the three suspects were taken into custody. Two civilian suspects were brought before the Haifa Magistrate's Court to request an extension of their detention, while the soldier appeared before a military court. The soldier's detention was extended until next Wednesday for investigative purposes. The findings of the investigation will be transferred to the State Prosecutor's Office for review.

Both the Israel Police and the Military Police Investigation Unit stated they "will continue to act with determination and cooperation against the trafficking and leakage of military means of warfare into unauthorized hands, which pose a real danger to public safety and could be used to commit serious criminal offenses."

This arrest follows a report from earlier this week that three M16 rifles were stolen from a naval commando base in Atlit on Tuesday. An IDF soldier serving at that base was arrested in connection with that theft.

The IDF stated, "The IDF views any incident of weapons theft very seriously and acts with determination to prevent such incidents in cooperation with the Israel Police."
