Israeli Reserve Soldier Arrested for Illegal Weapons Possession and Suspected Arms Trafficking
An active reserve soldier living in southern Israel was arrested this week on suspicion of illegal possession and trafficking of firearms. In a joint operation by the Lachish District Police and the Military Police Investigations Unit, authorities raided the soldier's home and seized an assault rifle (Kalashnikov), a sniper rifle, and a large quantity of ammunition. The suspect was taken for further interrogation under suspicion of selling weapons.
The investigation followed intelligence reports suggesting the soldier was involved in arms trading. During initial questioning, the soldier claimed the weapons and ammunition were collected from combat zones in the Gaza border area following the October 7 attacks. However, police and military investigators rejected this explanation, suspecting the weapons were intended for sale and distribution to criminal elements.
Police officials emphasized the importance of inter-agency cooperation in preventing illegal arms transfers to crime organizations. A senior police source told Walla News that their intensive field operations help curb violence and murder incidents. This arrest is part of "Operation Iron Net," launched months ago by Police Commissioner Dan Levy, aiming to eradicate illegal weapons and reduce violence, particularly in Arab communities.
The Southern District Commander, Chief Superintendent Haim Bublil, has instructed forces to intensify pressure on weapon holders and dealers, resulting in dozens of firearms seizures so far. The ongoing crackdown reflects the police's commitment to combating illegal arms circulation and related criminal activity across the region.
