John Malkovich Cancels Israel Performance Over Misattributed Quotes

American actor John Malkovich has canceled a scheduled April 13, 2027, performance in Tel Aviv after Israeli organizers attributed statements to him that he denies making. Malkovich was slated to appear at the Charles Bronfman Auditorium with his musical-theatrical production "The Music Critic."

An initial press release, purportedly from Malkovich, stated he was "excited to return to Israel," anticipating a reunion with the "warm Israeli audience" to whom he feels "closeness and solidarity," sending "much love." These remarks were published by various Israeli and international media outlets, including The Jerusalem Post and The Hollywood Reporter.

Israeli producer Alon Yurik later attributed the quote to an error stemming from a "misunderstanding" and offered apologies. However, Malkovich asserted he never uttered these words, did not approve them, and only learned of the attributed statement after its publication. He stated that the PR company hired by the Israeli organizer drafted the text independently, presenting it as a direct quote.

"They do not reflect my feelings," Malkovich emphasized, deeming the publication of such words in his name unacceptable. He cited this as the reason for canceling his Tel Aviv appearance. Malkovich also clarified that his performances in any country do not signify endorsement of its politics, government actions, or leaders. He explained that his Tel Aviv engagement was intended as one stop on "The Music Critic's" tour across Europe and the Middle East.

Malkovich has performed in dozens of countries with various theatrical and musical projects, including nations whose policies or cultures he does not necessarily agree with. He concluded by stating that art can overcome conflicts, but only authorized writers can put words in his mouth, and only with his consent. "The Music Critic" features Malkovich as a scathing critic reading real negative reviews of classical composers, accompanied by live music. This planned visit would have been Malkovich's third cultural trip to Israel, following earlier performances in 2008 and 2013.
