John Malkovich Cancels Israel Performance Over Fabricated Quote

Hollywood actor John Malkovich has canceled his upcoming performance of "The Music Critic" in Tel Aviv, originally scheduled for April 13. The cancellation follows a controversy surrounding a fabricated quote attributed to Malkovich, which appeared in promotional material.

The initial announcement falsely claimed Malkovich was "excited to return to Israel" and expressed fondness for the "warm Israeli audience." The local production team later clarified that Malkovich never made these statements and that they were a misunderstanding. Malkovich himself confirmed this in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, explaining that a public relations firm hired by the Israeli producer drafted the quote without his consultation or approval.

"I did not say these sentences, they were certainly not approved by me and they do not reflect my feelings," Malkovich stated. "The fact that they were published as direct quotes from me is unacceptable and unjustifiable." He cited this misrepresentation as the reason for his withdrawal from the Tel Aviv show.

Malkovich emphasized that his decision was not a political statement against performing in Israel. He noted that performing in any country, including his own, does not constitute an endorsement of its government's policies. He has previously performed in various countries, even when disagreeing with their governments' stances or values.

The actor also shared his belief in the importance of culture, especially during times of conflict, suggesting art can help process grief and pain. However, he reiterated that his performances do not signify support for political causes, violence, or terrorism. Malkovich concluded by stating that only playwrights, authors, and screenwriters can put words in his mouth for the sake of a story, and no one else should do so without his consent.
