Macklemore Defends Himself, States 'My Message is Peace'

Rapper Macklemore attempted to quell the controversy surrounding his opening act for Ed Sheeran at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. During his second performance, the rapper clarified that his criticism of Israel is not directed at Jewish people, while simultaneously reiterating his strong accusations against the country. "To all my Jewish brothers and sisters, criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, and opposition to genocide are in no way criticism of you," Macklemore stated from the stage. "My message is peace and love, and that all human beings should be treated with respect and equality."

The controversy erupted after his first performance on Friday, during which the rapper declared that one reason he joined Sheeran's tour was the opportunity to stand in stadiums across the United States and call to "free Palestine." In front of over 80,000 spectators, Macklemore performed his controversial song "Hind's Hall," written in tribute to American campus protests and named after Hamilton Hall at Columbia University, which was breached and occupied by pro-Palestinian demonstrators. During the performance, one-sided political messages and images from Gaza were displayed on the stadium's giant screens.

The rapper utilized the musical stage as a political rally, leveraging the global platform provided by Sheeran. In response, the Israeli American Council (IAC), representing over 150,000 members, launched a petition calling for Sheeran and the production company Live Nation to immediately remove Macklemore from the "Loop Tour" international concert series. "This was an Ed Sheeran concert, not a political rally, not a demonstration, and not an activist event," the petition stated.

The organization emphasized that this was a cynical exploitation of a musical performance, clarifying, "The question is not the right to hold political views, but where the line is drawn when an opening act uses a global platform to promote a one-sided agenda without context. Freedom of speech is not freedom from responsibility, your stage, your responsibility." As of now, it is unclear whether Sheeran or the production company will respond to the petition or take any action. Macklemore is expected to continue opening for Sheeran at further dates on the American tour unless a decision is made otherwise due to public pressure. This is not the first time Macklemore has caused controversy due to his political stances; the rapper is known for his strong criticism of Israel and his overt support for pro-Palestinian positions, but this instance saw him choose to use an exceptionally large musical stage to convey his messages.
