Macklemore Faces Backlash Over Pro-Palestine Remarks at Ed Sheeran Concert
Rapper Macklemore is facing calls for his removal from Ed Sheeran's "Mathematics Tour" after delivering pro-Palestinian speeches and displaying related imagery during his opening sets. During his performance on Friday, Palestinian flags were waved, and videos calling for the liberation of Palestine were shown on screen while Macklemore delivered a political statement.
"I believe that every person walking on this earth deserves the exact same freedom," Macklemore stated, addressing residents of Gaza and the West Bank, assuring them they were not forgotten. He reiterated these sentiments during his second performance the following night.
The Israeli-American Council has launched a petition demanding Macklemore's dismissal from the tour, arguing that the concert was for Ed Sheeran's music, not a political rally. The petition questions the appropriateness of using a platform granted for a warm-up act to promote a one-sided political agenda.
Audience reactions were divided. Some attendees expressed disappointment, stating they left the concert because they did not expect a political demonstration, with some accusing Macklemore of antisemitism. Others praised his message, asserting that music has historically served as a platform for activism and that this instance should be no different.
Macklemore has a history of pro-Palestinian views, notably releasing the song "Hind's Hall" in 2024, which heavily criticized Israel's actions in Gaza. Proceeds from that song were donated to UNRWA.
