Macklemore Defends Pro-Palestinian Stance During Ed Sheeran Shows

Rapper Macklemore has responded to backlash following his performances as an opening act for Ed Sheeran in New Jersey, where he expressed support for Palestinians and performed his song "Hind's Hall." Macklemore shared a video of his on-stage remarks, stating, "The desire for all human beings to be treated with equal respect should never be controversial." The controversy began when Macklemore, wearing a keffiyeh, called for "Free Palestine" and told the audience he wanted people in Gaza and the West Bank to know they were not forgotten. He then performed "Hind's Hall," a song critical of Israel, with pro-Palestinian imagery displayed on large screens.

Despite initial criticism, Macklemore repeated his messages at a subsequent show at the same venue. He addressed Jewish audience members, asserting that "criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, and opposition to genocide are in no way criticism towards you." He reiterated his message as one of "peace, love, and that all human beings should be treated with dignity and equality." The performances drew criticism from Jewish and Israeli fans. The Israeli-American Council (IAC) launched a petition urging Ed Sheeran and tour organizers to remove Macklemore from future shows, arguing that the event was a concert, not a political rally, and questioned whether his political statements were pre-approved.

Singer Pink also weighed in by sharing a post from the organization StopAntisemitism that called Macklemore's performance "Awful" and suggested fans deserved an apology and refund for being exposed to "anti-Israel propaganda." Pink's post, in turn, faced criticism from those who supported Macklemore's message. Ed Sheeran has not publicly commented on the controversy, and Macklemore is currently still scheduled to perform at upcoming shows on the tour.
