Esteemed Israeli Actor Ilan Dar Dies at 89

The Israeli cultural scene is mourning the passing of Ilan Dar, a veteran, prolific, and highly regarded actor, who died at the age of 89. Dar, whose career spanned over six decades, left an indelible mark on Israeli theater, cinema, and television.

Born Ilan Blauweiss in Tel Aviv, Dar began his acting journey at the "Ohel" Theater and was among the founding actors of the Haifa Theater in the early 1960s. He performed for nearly two decades at the Cameri Theater in major productions such as "The Sorrows of Job" and "Angels in America." Later, he starred in Habima, Beit Lessin, and Beer Sheva theaters, also venturing into directing and translating plays. At Beit Lessin, he notably portrayed Shimon Peres in the play "Oslo."

On the big screen, Dar appeared in numerous cult films, often embodying the classic "Ashkenazi" character in "Burekas" films, a genre popular in Israeli cinema. He collaborated with Ze'ev Revach on hits like "Only Today" and "He Who Steals from a Thief is Exempt." His performance in the film "Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem" earned him an Ophir Award nomination. He also featured in "Love in the Slices" and "The Agency."

On television, beyond the immense success of the sitcom "Neighbors" in 1983, Dar participated in series including "The Kastner Trial," "Line 300," "The 80s," and "Golden Girls."

Dar's extensive work garnered him numerous prestigious awards throughout his career, including the Rubin Prize, a commendation from the Artists' Association of Israel, the title "Worthy Citizen of Tel Aviv-Yafo," and in 2023, the Arik Einstein Prize for the Arts from the Ministry of Culture.

He is survived by his wife, set designer Ruth Dar, and their daughter.
