Family Seeks Answers After Border Guard Killed in Netanya Shooting

The family of Sergeant David Hoyer Amrani, a 20-year-old Border Police officer killed in a shooting incident in Netanya, is demanding answers regarding the circumstances of his death. The Department for the Investigation of Police Personnel (DIIP) has launched an investigation into the unusual event.

Amrani, a resident of Netanya, was on duty with a rifle in the Kiryat HaSharon neighborhood when residents reported hearing prolonged bursts of gunfire. Police forces were dispatched, initially unaware of the shooter's identity or motive, and a security incident was suspected. According to police, Amrani did not respond to commands to stop, and at one point, opened fire on the officers. The officers returned fire, hitting him. He was critically wounded and later pronounced dead at the hospital. No officers or civilians were injured in the incident.

The family is struggling to comprehend the event, with Amrani's uncle stating they "still don't understand the details of the incident" and are awaiting professional explanations. The chairman of the Organization of Disabled IDF Veterans, Adv. Idan Kleiman, suggested that Amrani had requested a transfer from the West Bank area over a month prior, indicating a "warning light" that he believes the system failed to heed.

However, Amrani was not known to the Ministry of Defense's rehabilitation department for post-traumatic stress, nor was he receiving treatment for such issues. Friends reported no signs of distress in the days leading up to the incident, noting he was preparing for another week of service shortly before leaving his home with his weapon.

The DIIP investigation is expected to focus on Amrani's behavior and the events preceding the shooting, as well as the responding officers' actions, including their knowledge at the time, the encounter's progression, and the circumstances leading to the fatal gunfire.
