MAGAV Soldier Fatally Shot by Police in Netanya After Opening Fire

A Border Police (MAGAV) officer, identified as David Hoyer Amrani, was killed in Netanya on September 5 after he opened fire on police officers. The incident occurred in the Kiryat HaSharon neighborhood. Prior to the shooting, Amrani was seen on the street in civilian clothing carrying a long-barreled weapon, but acquaintances reported his behavior in the days leading up to the event did not raise suspicion. He had reportedly prepared his clothes for the upcoming work week shortly before the incident.

Eyewitnesses described hearing numerous shots and seeing people panic. One resident recounted hiding with her sister as the man fired into the air and moved towards their building, with the situation lasting about twenty minutes. Her brother observed the armed man moving between buildings and firing, appearing to be in control of his actions, and alerted the police.

While PTSD was suggested as a possible factor, the Ministry of Defense stated Amrani was not registered with or seeking help from a rehabilitation department. The investigation is ongoing, initially handled by the Central District Police, but will be transferred to the Police Internal Investigations Department (MAHASH) due to police involvement.

Idan Kleiman, chairman of the Disabled IDF Veterans Organization, warned that similar tragedies could recur without timely identification and treatment of PTSD, suggesting Amrani's request for a transfer might have been an overlooked sign of psychological distress.
