Ex-Soldier Fatally Shot by Police After Opening Fire in Netanya

A security forces member, believed to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, was killed by police in Netanya on Tuesday after he opened fire on passersby and then engaged in a shootout with responding officers. The incident occurred in the Kiryat Sharon neighborhood.

Initially, the individual fired a long rifle at civilians, but no one was injured in this first burst of gunfire. Police forces were quickly dispatched to the scene. A gun battle ensued between the suspect and the officers, who returned fire and critically wounded him. He was subsequently pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Central District Commander, Superintendent Amir Cohen, was en route to the scene. The police stated that a suspect who fired at police forces in the Kiryat Sharon area of Netanya was neutralized by rapidly responding officers and combatants. Large forces from the Central District were operating in and around the area, and the perpetrator was neutralized. No casualties were reported among the security forces.
